Traffic Calming

Traffic calming measures are used to increase safety for all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists.

Traffic calming measures encourage responsible driver behaviour and improve road safety. Measures include:

  • roundabouts
  • speed bumps
  • rumble strips
  • median islands and pedestrian refuges.

During roadworks or road closures, traffic calming measures help to manage and control traffic volume. This can be as simple as signage and traffic cones, or it could be roadworkers directing traffic.

Before implementing traffic calming measures, the City assesses traffic data and community feedback. The data provides traffic volumes, travel speeds and crash statistics. Data is captured through various methods, but the community would most likely see it as black ropes across the road.

Once determined that traffic calming is warranted, the City allocates funds in the annual budget.

The City's undertakes a public consultation process for all roadworks. Adjacent residents are consulted before finalising the design and carrying out any works.

If you have any questions about traffic calming measures, pleaseĀ contact us. You can also submit feedback or report an issue through ourĀ online portal.
