Welcome from the Mayor

As Mayor, I would like to thank you for choosing to make the City of Canning your new home.

You join almost 100,000 other residents who choose to work, live and play in Canning and who enjoy our wonderful recreational amenities which include endless walking and cycling trails through our parks, along our river foreshores, and through the pristine natural environment of the Canning River Regional Park.

For those raising families, Canning offers some of the state’s very best schools, beautiful parks and gardens, a broad selection of playing fields and playgrounds, an enviable choice of libraries and recreation centres, and a strong and vibrant local economy which provides many career options in the retail and commercial sectors.

I am proud to say that my own family have been residents of Canning since the late 1950s and that four generations of my family currently reside right here in the City of Canning. My strong links to the area give me a deep appreciation of this district, and an understanding of the importance of working together to create a community that we can all be proud of.

I am equally proud to have witnessed Canning evolve into a welcoming and thriving community which embraces and celebrates cultures and faith’s from every corner of the world. Canning is a unique cultural melting pot where we respect and admire our differences, take bold steps to demonstrate our inclusivity, and where we also acknowledge and respect our Australian way of life.

Our diversity is our strength. It opens the door to creativity, innovative thinking and fresh ideas borne from curiosity, and an attitude of openness and authenticity. Tolerance, understanding, kindness, and compassion are the cornerstones upon which our community has been built, and so I know that you will be welcomed into this community with open arms.

This is an exciting time to make Canning your home. Our City is evolving rapidly and is changing in response to the needs of today, and the requirements of tomorrow.

I urge you to step forward, immerse yourself in Canning, and help to create the type of community that you want it to be. Follow us on social media, check out our website, take advantage of the City’s many free events, visit our libraries and recreation centres, join a sporting or community club, or consider volunteering for one of our many environmental groups.

On behalf of the City of Canning and its Council, welcome.
