Asbestos management

It is important for homeowners and renovators to safely manage asbestos in and around the home.

In 1987, manufacturing of asbestos stopped because of the health issues it can cause when damaged. Before this, asbestos was commonly found in building materials because of its durability, insulation, and fire resistance.

To prevent exposure to asbestos, it is best to leave it undisturbed, although there may be times you need to replace it.

Any person handling and disposing of materials containing asbestos is required to follow the Health (Asbestos) Regulations 1992.

Limited amounts of asbestos sheeting (no more than 8 sheets) can be disposed of at the City’s Waste Transfer Station. There are fees and acceptance requirements for this material. Visit the Waste Transfer Station page to learn more.

Residents can remove up to 10 square meters of asbestos themselves. To remove greater than 10 square meters, you must hire an asbestos licence-holder to remove it. You can find an asbestos licence-holder on the WA Government website.

Businesses must have an Asbestos Removal Licence to remove greater than 10 square metres. To apply for a licence, visit the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety website.

The City can respond to asbestos issues which cause an imminent public health issue. You can report an asbestos-related issue online.
