Food Vendor Permits (events and markets)

Food vendors such as food stalls and food vehicles trading within the City of Canning, must obtain permission to trade at Events and the Canning vale markets. 

All temporary food businesses are required to comply with the Food Act 2008, the Food Regulations 2009 and the Food Standards Code.  In particular, the food business MUST be registered under the Food Act 2008 through the local government where the stall / vehicle is stored / garaged. 

Markets

Trading in a public place requires a permit and all Food Businesses must be Registered. To streamline the process, as of 1 July 2024 the City now offers a once-off Permit running with the financial year, with an annual renewal if requested. Application Fee is minimal and covers the cost of processing the application. Please note:

• Applications must be submitted 7 working days PRIOR to the first trading date.
• Applications received after this time may not be approved by the trading date.
• Please call Health Services on 1300 422 664 if you intend to submit a late application.

To apply to sell food at markets, please complete an Food Vendor Permit Application (Markets Only).

What you need to apply

1. You must ensure that your food business is registered with your local authority (i.e., with the local government that you live within). You will need to upload a copy of Food Act Registration Certificate.
2. You must have current public liability insurance – you will need to upload a copy.
3. Permit fee applies as indicated on application.
4. Permit is valid for the full current financial year, irrespective of the duration you wish to trade.
5. You can choose to renew your permit annually – invoice can be sent to you rather than reapplying for a new permit the following financial year.
6. You must have permission from the markets manager, Perth Markets Group Limited, to trade at the Canning Vale Markets. Become a stall holder – Perth Market.
7. You can use the same permit to attend City of Canning organised events with permission from the event organiser. Event Coordinator must confirm your invite to attend an event. Lodge an expression of interest to trade at City of Canning events.
8. Environmental Health Officers may attend the markets and events to review your food business to determine compliance with Food legislation.
9. The normal provisions of the Food Act 2008 and Food Standards Code apply.

Permission to sell food at City of Canning approved events

What you need to provide

A Permit Application is not required, however your business must be registered under the Food Act 2008. You will also need to seek permission from the event organiser prior to the event and obtain an invite to trade at the event. The Event Coordinator must confirm your invite to attend an event. Complete an expression of interest to trade at City of Canning events.

The event organiser will require the following:

1. You must ensure that your food business is registered with your local authority (i.e., with the local government that you live within) – you will need to provide a copy of Food Act Registration Certificate.
2. You must have current public liability insurance – you will need to provide a copy.

Environmental Health Officers may attend events to review your food business to determine compliance with Food legislation. The normal provisions of the Food Act 2008 and Food Standards Code apply.

On the day that you trade

Ensure that:

• Your food business complies with the Food Act and Food Standards Code. Download the pre-trade checklist (PDF 140KB).
• You have completed and kept a copy of the following relevant safety documents:
• have temperature of transportation records
• have temperature display (of potentially hazardous foods) records
• cleaning and sanitising records of food contact surfaces (i.e. utensils, benches, cutlery, plates).

Food safety and hygiene requirements

Food business must ensure their food handling staff have the adequate skills and knowledge to undertake work in a safe environment to prevent food poisoning outbreaks. This is a requirement under the Food Safety Standard 3.2.2 and Food Safety Standard 3.2.2A.

Not for Profit / Charitable

A Permit Application is not required; however you will need to seek permission from the event organiser prior to the event and obtain an invite to trade at the event. The Event Coordinator must confirm your invite to attend an event. Complete an expression of interest to trade at City of Canning events.

If you sell food to raise money for charity or a community cause, and the food is not potentially hazardous or, if it is, after cooking it is sold for immediate consumption, for example sausage sizzles, or selling soft drinks, you may be an exempted food business and may not be required to show Food Act Registration. You will need to provide public and products liability insurance.

The City recommends that all food handlers are encouraged to complete the FoodSafe online food safety training. The City of Canning provides free access to this training:

• register your food business details
• purchase the training and type FSCANNI350 in the “Redeem Online Voucher” section to access for free.
