Taking an idea and turning it into a business is exciting. Where we can, the City is here to help make your dream a reality.
When starting a new business, there are important steps you need to go through to ensure you are running a safe and legal business. From a local government perspective, this means having:
- a business plan
- all required permits
- your business registered with the relevant authorities.
We recommend the Small Business Development Corporation (SBDC) as a starting point. They provide support, guidance, and resources to help you start a new business. The steps they take you through will teach you about business planning, your legal obligations, determining skills, and much more.
Once you’re ready to start your new business, the City has a few steps we recommend following:
Step 1 – Research Canning
Canning is a great location for all types of businesses. The City Profile page will take you through the economics and demographics of working in Canning.
On the Maps page, we have a free-to-use online mapping tool you can use to look property details, ward boundaries, and much more.
Step 2 – Determine required permits
Different businesses have different permit requirements. We have outlined our permit processes online:
Health premises permits and approvals
Approvals, licenses, and permits are required for new businesses to operate within the City.
Group and personal training in parks
There’s a range of criteria that must be met for personal and group training within parks in the City of Canning.
If you don’t fit one of these categories, use the SBDC Business Licence Finder. This tool will list the permits and licences you may need based on the information you provide.
Step 3 – Building and Planning Services
Your business may require building and/or planning services.
Planning Services
The City's Planning Services provides information and guidelines for development applications for residents, developers, builders and planners.
Building Services
Building Services control the construction, occupation and demolition of buildings and incidental structures through the issuing of permits.
Application Lodgement and Tracking
You can lodge and track your building and planning applications online through My Canning.
