Canning Vale Food Value Add Precinct Report

Canning Vale is a major food hub with a rich history, including farming, distribution, and manufacturing.

The City of Canning has engaged the Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre (BCEC) to assess and report on the economic case and potential opportunities in the Canning Vale industrial area.

These opportunities would see Canning Vale become a Food Value Add Precinct. In a Food Value Add Precinct, businesses have innovative logistics and manufacturing processes to provide higher value products. These businesses trade locally, domestically, and internationally, with both wholesale and direct customers.

The Canning Vale Food Value Add Precinct report highlights that Canning Vale has many factors in place already that would support the creation of the precinct, including:

• access to key infrastructure
• a ready workforce
• an existing cluster of food related industries.

Canning Vale’s food history

Up until the late 1970s, Canning Vale was a rich farming area. It consisted of market gardens and dairy farms due to its ideal conditions – swampy terrain with fresh water.

As industrialisation occurred, Canning Vale became home to the Swan Brewery. The facility did everything from blowing the glass bottles to brewing the beer.

In more modern times, Canning Vale has been home to the Perth Markets. The markets are WA’s only wholesaler of fresh fruit and vegetable, and it transacts 50% of the state’s fresh produce.

Coupled with strong residential growth, Canning Vale has become a vibrant and bustling region. It is filled with major food businesses such as Tip Top bakery, Dinner Twist, and KB Foods – the largest seafood company in Australia.
